AlumDeck vs Hivebrite

Hivebrite is a hosted community platform with published pricing: $895 a month for Core and $1,995 a month for Flex, billed annually, with add-ons on top. AlumDeck is self-hosted alumni software for $49 once. The gap is not a rounding error, and neither is the difference in what you get.

Hivebrite prices are taken from their own published pricing page, not from a quote. Add-ons are charged separately.

What Hivebrite is genuinely better at

Three things, and the first one is a standard most of this industry fails.

They publish their prices

Of the twelve alumni platforms we researched, only two publish a self-serve price at all. Hivebrite is one of them. You can read Core at $895 a month and Flex at $1,995 a month, billed annually, before you speak to anybody. That is genuinely better behaviour than most of the market, and we are not going to attack a competitor for the one thing we most want everyone else to copy.

It is built for a community programme with a department behind it

The price implies the buyer. Hivebrite is sold to organisations where running the community is somebody's full-time job, often across more than an alumni body. If that is your situation, the platform is scoped for you and AlumDeck is not.

Everything operational is theirs

Servers, patching, uptime, backups, capacity on the day you email fifty thousand people. All included. With AlumDeck every one of those becomes a job on your side, and that work does not disappear because you paid less.

Side by side

Both columns are published figures, which is rare enough in this market to be worth saying twice.

When you should buy Hivebrite instead

The price difference is so large that it is tempting to argue it is always decisive. It is not.

Your community is much bigger than your alumni

If you are running a professional network, several member classes and a set of programmes across them, you are buying a community platform rather than alumni software. AlumDeck is scoped for alumni: batch years, reunions, giving, mentoring, a directory. It is not a general-purpose community system and it will not grow into one.

The budget exists and the staff time does not

At $10,740 a year the cost of the platform may be smaller than the cost of your team's attention. If one full-time community manager saves two days a month by not touching infrastructure, the maths can genuinely favour the subscription. Work it out with your own salary numbers rather than ours.

You want to buy capability rather than build it

Hivebrite sells add-ons. That means the platform can be extended by purchase as your programme grows. AlumDeck has one set of modules and no shop; if what you need is not on the features page, buying it is not an option and building it is on you.

Nobody will own the server

This is the same answer we give on every comparison page, because it is the honest one. Self-hosted software with no owner becomes an unpatched application holding personal data. If that is your likely outcome, pay the subscription.

Questions people ask when comparing these two

How much does Hivebrite cost?

Their published pricing page lists Core at $895 a month and Flex at $1,995 a month, both billed annually, which works out at $10,740 and $23,940 a year.

Add-ons are charged separately, so treat those figures as a floor rather than a total. We have not been quoted by them and this is simply what they publish.

Is AlumDeck a serious Hivebrite alternative?

For an alumni programme, yes on function: directory, member verification, events with RSVPs, giving pages, mentoring, a job board, news and newsletters are all in the $49 licence.

For a large multi-programme community with staff running it daily, no. Different products, different institutions, and the gap is in service and scale rather than in the feature list.

Does AlumDeck have add-ons or paid extras?

No. There is no add-on store, no premium tier and no module withheld for a bigger licence, because there is only one licence.

The things that genuinely cost extra are hosting, from about $3 a month, and a domain. Both are listed openly on the pricing page.

What is the honest downside of paying $49?

You become the operations team. Backups, updates, uptime and the security of a server holding alumni records are all yours, and nobody will ring you when something breaks.

If that sentence made you uncomfortable, the subscription is not overpriced for you, it is correctly priced for you.
