AlumDeck vs ToucanTech
ToucanTech is a hosted alumni and community platform sold to schools and universities, with implementation included and a price quoted per institution. AlumDeck is self-hosted software for $49 once. Of all the comparisons on this site, this is the one where the two products are aimed at the most similar institutions and cost the most different amounts.
ToucanTech does not publish pricing. Third-party review sites estimate roughly $10,000 to $50,000 a year plus implementation, and that is an estimate rather than a quote.
What ToucanTech is genuinely better at
This is the competitor closest to our own buyer, so the honest section matters more here than anywhere else on the site.
Somebody else does the setup and the data
The estimates for ToucanTech include implementation, which means a project with people in it: your records moved across, your site configured, your team trained. If your alumni data is thirty years of spreadsheets, an old database and a filing cabinet, that work is the hard part of the job and it is worth paying for. AlumDeck has no migration service and no onboarding project.
It was built for institutions like yours, with institutions like yours behind it
ToucanTech sells to schools and universities and has done for years, so there are development directors who can tell you how it went. AlumDeck has no customers yet. We are not going to publish invented logos or testimonials to disguise that, so if peer references are part of your process, we fail it today.
The operational load never reaches your school
Hosting, patching, uptime and backups sit with the vendor. In a school where the website is looked after by an outside company on an hourly rate, moving that work off your plate has a real and calculable value.
Side by side

ToucanTech does not publish pricing. The range above is reported by third-party software review sites, not a quote we were given, and your quote may fall outside it entirely. The AlumDeck column is published in full on our pricing page.
$49 does not mean a form on a grey page
The reasonable worry about a one-time price is that you get something that looks like it. This is a real AlumDeck install, configured as a college alumni association, with the news module, member statistics and giving page in use.
There is no public live demo yet, and we are not going to pretend a screenshot tour is the same thing. What you can see is the running product rather than a mockup, and the demo page has the rest of it.

When you should buy ToucanTech instead
Four cases, and the first one closes more of these decisions than price ever does.
Your records need migrating and nobody in school will do it
Thirty years of alumni across a legacy database, three spreadsheets and a card index is a project, not a task. If nobody at the school has the weeks that project needs, buy the platform that includes people who will do it. A $49 licence does not import anything on its own.
The school needs a supplier with a track record
Governors and bursars often need to see that other schools already run the thing you are proposing. We have no customers to name yet. That is a fair objection and the right response is to buy the established product, not to argue with the objection.
There is a development office and a real budget
If alumni relations is a funded department rather than half of somebody's week, the constraint is staff attention rather than money. A hosted platform buys back attention. That trade is legitimate and we would rather you made it deliberately.
Nobody will own the hosting account
Self-hosted software with no owner ends up unpatched, holding the personal details of everyone who ever left your school. If your honest prediction is that no one will look after it, pay for a platform where that is somebody's job.

Who it is for
Questions people ask when comparing these two
How much does ToucanTech cost?
They do not publish a price. Third-party software review sites estimate roughly $10,000 to $50,000 a year, plus implementation, which is a wide range because it depends on the size of the institution.
Treat that as an estimate from review sites rather than a quote. The only real number is the one they give you.
Can AlumDeck import our existing alumni database?
There is no migration service, and we are not going to imply otherwise on a comparison page. Most schools start with the directory close to empty and let alumni register themselves, with an administrator approving each one.
If you are holding a large database and need to know exactly what the import path looks like, email hello@alumdeck.com before you buy rather than after.
Is AlumDeck enough for a school with a few thousand alumni?
Functionally yes. The directory, events with RSVPs, giving pages, news, newsletters, galleries by era and the timeline are all in the one licence, with no member limit.
The schools page linked above sets out who does what afterwards, including the two hours a week that no software removes.
What does the price difference actually pay for?
Hosting and its uptime, security patching, a support organisation, an implementation team and a sales process. Those are real costs and they are most of what any subscription funds.
With AlumDeck you take on the first three, do the fourth yourself, and skip the fifth. If your institution has the money and not the time, that is a bad trade, and we would rather you knew that from us.
If the migration project is not your problem, the price is
$49 once, unlimited alumni records, every module included, and a year of updates and support while you get the site live.
